The World Equestrian Games are always full of surprises for riders and spectators.

  12. Cesar Parra – Van the Man

  14. Lisa Wilcox – Denzello
  15. Brian Hafner – Lombardo LHF

This should be a solid group of contenders with many accustomed to dealing with public scandal, an essential skill for the modern Grand Prix competitor.

Cesar Parra is still facing legal trouble after permanently injuring a horse in his care.
FEI – “Cesar Parra is an excellent horseman who would never put a horse's life at risk during training.”

You may recognize Cesar Parra, who is still fighting a suit naming him as negligent in the abuse and injury of a horse in his care. In hopes of bolstering Cesar Parra's spirit for the next competition year, the FEI plans to award Parra for his contributions to horse health and welfare.

John Byrialsen was curious about concentration camps, attempted to recreate it at his Polish stud farm as a memorial to WWII.
Byrialsen's method of culling horses. “They should've been born better, they need to know they don't deserve a better life for the rest of their [short] lives.”
Tina Konyot also gained some extra publicity this year thanks to her connection to John Byrialsen. If you've already forgotten, Byrialsen was the owner of a Polish stud farm with uniquely saavy business protocol.

Owned by Mitt Romney, Rafalca enjoyed the transition from questionable tax deduction to hobby tax status after the Presidential race.
“Rafalca's #1, even if she doesn't win. It's important she knows we're behind her 100% of the way.”

And let's not forget about Jan Ebeling riding Rafalca, the mare who withstood an onslaught of jokes as Mitt Romney's wife's tax-deductable horse.

Let the games begin!
